Throughout my life, I have been asking for forgiveness for one thing or another because I am flawed. As a human being, I am a flawed creature not in my creation but in my spirit or nature. I am helplessly bent toward sin and prone to rebellion and mistake. So, I mess up and am willful, as are we all. Each of us has inherited this tendency toward sin. It was not intended by God our creator but introduced by our first mother and father in their rebellion against God. Ever since we have needed to receive forgiveness for our transgressions, we need to own up to our failures, fallen nature, and inability to change ourselves. We need God’s help to change our nature and His mercy and grace to forgive our sins. This requires confession. Confession is a foundational piece of our faith and practice as followers of Christ Jesus. And we also need to confess to each other when we harm one another intentionally or unintentionally.
This is the subject of the sermon this week on January 28th. The text for Sunday will be Nehemiah 9:1-3 and James 5:16. I invite you to read them in preparation.
Peace,
Burt
